Rosewater, merchant mansions & the oldest human settlement in Iran
Kashan is one of Iran's oldest urban centres, with the Sialk Ziggurat nearby dating settlement in the area back roughly 7,000 years. The city reached its height under the Safavids, whose royal court favoured Kashan's silk and carpet workshops. It is also Iran's rosewater capital — the surrounding fields have supplied the world's finest rose oil and rosewater for centuries, celebrated each May during the Golabgiri (rose-harvest) festival.
Tabatabaei and Borujerdi Houses are peak examples of 19th-century Persian domestic architecture, their courtyards and painted ceilings rivalling anything in Isfahan. Fin Garden, the oldest surviving Persian garden (UNESCO-listed), was also the site of the 1852 assassination of Amir Kabir, Iran's reformist prime minister. Sultan Amir Ahmad Bathhouse, a Safavid hammam converted into a teahouse, showcases the era's mastery of light, geometry and tile.
Kashan is celebrated for its rose-water confections, rose oil perfumes and hand-woven carpets — particularly the intricate 'Kashan carpet' style that commands premium prices internationally. The city's old quarter bazaar remains a living craft market for copperwork, textiles and pottery. Local sweets made with rosewater and saffron are some of the most distinctive in Iran.
Abyaneh Village, perched at 2,200m in the foothills of the Karkas Mountains, is famous for its red mud-brick houses (built from the area's distinctive crimson soil) and for residents who still wear traditional Sassanid-era clothing on feast days. The Sialk Ziggurat, just outside Kashan, is one of the oldest man-made structures in the world. Natanz's Friday Mosque is a detour worth making for its Ilkhanid-era tile vault.
Kashan's fame rests on its historic merchant houses — the Tabatabaei, Borujerdi and Abbasi mansions, each a masterclass in Qajar domestic architecture with sunken courtyards, windcatchers and stained glass. The Agha Bozorg Mosque, with its serene sunken courtyard, is considered a Qajar architectural gem. The Sultan Amir Ahmad Bathhouse rewards a rooftop climb for views over the city's domes. Tepe Sialk, a 7,500-year-old ziggurat, is among the oldest human settlements in Iran. Just outside town, the Fin Garden — a UNESCO Persian Garden fed entirely by qanats — is Kashan's crowning glory. Time your visit for May to catch the rosewater festival in nearby Qamsar.
